This week we're introducing our new designer vintage jewelry collection filled with iconic and authentic vintage Chanel styles from the 1980s and 90s. There are so many reasons why we love vintage Chanel jewelry! From the fascinating history of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel herself, to the evolution of the fashion house over the decades, to the impeccable quality and craftsmanship, there's no arguing that owning a piece of vintage Chanel is special as each piece holds so much history.

Inspired by the functionality of menswear clothing, Coco Chanel was a female entrepreneur much ahead of her time who post WWI, directly influenced the evolution of women's fashion to a more practical state while still upholding feminine elegance. The early (1920s-60s) haute couture fashion house of Chanel is most recognized for their quilted matching suits, the little black dress, Chanel no 5 perfume, fine jewelry and the quilted handbag. Coco Chanel passed away in the early 70s and the fashion house was not resurged until Karl Lagerfeld took over in the early 80s and used the rich company history as inspiration to revive it.

Most of the vintage Chanel pieces in our collection are from the 1980s and 90s. The iconic styles from these decades are what most people think of when they think of "vintage Chanel jewelry." Although still classified as costume jewelry, during these decades, the pieces were 18kt gold electroplated. We've never seen this level of electroplating on many other types of vintage jewelry and even Chanel doesn't do that high level of electroplating on their new jewelry styles these days.

During the 1980s and 90s, there are a handful of iconic motifs that Chanel designers favored including hearts, clovers, quilted bags, pearls and swirls. Also, most of their vintage pieces feature their linked double c logo. Jewelry was rolled out twice per year in in two seasonal collections, spring and fall. Chanel did not date pieces between 1986-1989 but anything after that time period is signed with the season and date.

The three Chanel jewelry pieces that we love having as go-tos in our personal collections are a pair of oversized statement earrings, a gold brooch and a pair of coin earrings. Coin earrings came in a variety of sizes ranging from 3/4" to 1 1/2" in width. Interestingly, Chanel didn't start designing pierced earrings until the 2000s so most vintage earrings are clip-on. We however, actually prefer clip-on earrings because they prevent drooping on the ear.
